All new Prego Cooking Sauces

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to review and try out the all new Prego Cooking Sauces. I’m not new to the Prego brand, but I had never tried anything from them outside of their pasta sauces. I was interested in seeing how the new sauces would add a new take on eating chicken with these cooking sauces. I can now say I’m glad I did not pass up on that opportunity.

Prego Sauce
As a BzzAgent I was chosen to review Prego’s Creamy Lemon Parmesan Cooking Sauce. It comes in a 15 oz. jar. When I opened my box inside were directions, the sauce wrapped well and secure, and coupons. This sauce consist of “savory Italian flavors of cream, Parmesan cheese, garlic and lemon”. I checked Prego’s website to see if there were any other flavors. They have:

Creamy Marsala (14.5 oz.)
Tomato & Fresh Ricotta (15 oz.)
Garlic and Italian Herb (15 oz.)
Carbonara (15 oz.)

Prego Creamy Lemon Parmesan
On the jar it says it only takes 20 minutes to be ready. I could not wait for my family and I to try the Creamy Lemon Parmesan with some Penne noodles. I put a pot of water on to boil for my noodles. While that was going I decided to cut up some chicken breasts into bite size pieces. I sautéed them in a skillet with some olive oil until no longer pink. I put my noodles in the boiling water to cook then drain. While that was going I poured in the cooking sauce. It was not too watery or too thick. I was sure not to water it down so I just used a spatula to get out the remaining sauce on the sides of the jar. As it heated up in the skillet I gave it a little taste test. It had such a nice flavor. Me being me I wanted to amp up the flavor so I added some lemon zest and a few shakes of garlic pepper season. Perfecto! I mixed in my cooked and drained Penne pasta. Dinner was served with a side of steamed broccoli and bread. It was a winner for my family.

Prego Coupons
I’m so glad they gave us 5 coupons for FREE jars of Prego Cooking Sauce. The only store in our area that carries these is Publix. Good thing it’s 5 minutes from where we live. They only had two other varieties that they carry outside of the one we had already tried. I grabbed both jars and was planning for our next Prego meal. I shared some coupons with others as I told them about how good the sauce was.

Prego Creamy Marsala   Prego Tomato & Fresh Ricotta
The Creamy Marsala was good but could have used more flavor in my opinion. I used it as instead of adding in more flavors like I did with the Creamy Lemon Parmesan. I may buy it again and add some sautéed garlic, mushrooms, and onion to it to see how they help the flavor. The Tomato & Fresh Ricotta is very flavorful. I decided to do a skillet lasagna using cut up boneless chicken thighs. All I can say is WOW!!! We really liked it. My son suggested trying the same thing again with ground beef or sausage.

All in all I think Prego did a good job coming up with these flavors. I wish they had the other varieties at our local Publix. It would have been interesting to see how they pan out. For nutrition facts, ingredients, and to read about all the different varieties, visit Prego to learn more.

Fried Cabbage with Smoked Sausage

Fried Cabbage with Smoked Sausage
Here is a meal that is not only easy to fix but budget friendly too. When cabbage is marked down to 49 cents a pound, I take advantage of it so I can make this recipe I’m about to share. I do use cabbage for other things, but this meal is a popular request. My husband loves eating cabbage this way. He jokes about me needing to buy several heads of cabbage at once to fix plenty of this because he could eat it everyday.

Fried Cabbage with Smoked Sausage

Ingredients:
1 medium to large head of cabbage
1 lb. Smoked Sausage, sliced into 1” rounds or moons
1 medium yellow or white onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
1 stick of butter
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
1 tsp. sugar
1 Tbsp. Apple Cider Vinegar (or distilled white)
1/4 cup. chicken broth

Directions:
Pull off the outer dark green leaves from your cabbage and discard. Give the cabbage a good rinse and pat dry. Cut cabbage (with a good sharp knife) into smaller sections (ex: fourths) to make it easier to handle. You don’t want to use a dull knife to cut the cabbage. That could be dangerous. Do be very careful with that sharp knife as well. After you get your pieces into smaller sections you can handle, cut the core out of the middle. You can discard that or save it to use with other scraps to make a homemade veggie broth. I’m a firm believer in homemade broths and stocks. I believe that contributes to why we hardly get sick in our home (twice a year is the most). Slice your cabbage into shreds and sit aside.

In a large skillet heated on medium high heat with a little olive oil, cook your sliced smoked sausage to brown on both sides. Remove to drain. In that same skillet add your onion and cook for about 5 minutes. Cut off a good chunk of your butter and add to skillet to melt. It’s time to start adding in your cabbage shreds a little at a time. As it cooks down add in more cabbage and remaining butter. Keep doing this until you have used it all. Now you can add in the garlic cloves. It will seem like a lot of cabbage at first. Don’t worry because it will cook down. That’s why I like using a large cabbage so that we can have plenty. My mom told me it’s best to use the large one as well unless you have only 1-2 people to feed. She also said the whole stick of butter is necessary to cook the cabbage because it needs the fat. Believe me you won’t be sorry when you taste it. Add in the sugar, seasonings, vinegar, and broth. Cover your skillet and turn the heat down to low. Let that simmer about 20 minutes stirring occasionally. Serve and enjoy!

Fried Cabbage with Sausage
Notes: We eat ours with tomato pie (see pic above) and a slice of homemade cornbread (sorry not shown). If you don’t want to do this in the skillet, you can also do it in a pressure cooker. It has more of a smothered cabbage texture to me when done that way but it’s still delish! You can also swap out the smoked sausage and use a pack of bacon.
