A Christian wife must be careful so that she is being a wise woman and not a foolish one who tears her house down (Proverbs 14:1) over such matters. We as wives need to discuss these things with our husband’s to show our respect for them having an opinion on the matter. Even if we don’t agree with them about some things, we should continue showing respect and go before God in prayer about our concerns.
After our son was born my husband and I discussed how we would handle holidays with him as he was growing up. Both of us grew up going to church and celebrating all holidays the everyone else in the world does. Through prayer and lots of researching the roots and history of different holidays, we came to a mutual decision for each one. In our house, we don’t participate in Halloween because we see a LOT in scripture (see below) that makes the whole thing questionable. We have heard many opinions of alternatives, but my husband is not convinced that God would have us do any different. He doesn’t want any money used towards supporting this holiday. I support him in this so that means no decorations, costumes, candy, parties, trick or treating, going to hunted houses or to see horror movies, etc.
We believe we are called to be different from the world. Living different has allowed us to witness in ways we didn’t imagine. That is why we have different convictions concerning how we live our lives. We homeschooled, I’m the keeper of our home (don’t work outside the home), we celebrate Christmas without Santa and Easter without Bunnies and baskets (we observe the Resurrection instead). These are just a few of our family’s convictions. It doesn’t mean I have no respect for other families' convictions (See Romans chapter 14). We even taught our son (when he was younger) to respect other people’s convictions that are not the same as ours. So here are some scriptures that many Christian families (like ours) base their convictions in choosing not to participate in Halloween:
Leviticus 19:30-31 (CSB)
30 Keep my Sabbaths and revere my sanctuary; I am the Lord.31 Do not turn to mediums or consult spiritists, or you will be defiled by them; I am the Lord your God.
Deuteronomy 18:9-14 (CSB)
9 “When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not imitate the detestable customs of those nations.10 No one among you is to sacrifice his son or daughter in the fire, practice divination, tell fortunes, interpret omens, practice sorcery,
11 cast spells, consult a medium or a spiritist, or inquire of the dead.
12 Everyone who does these acts is detestable to the Lord, and the Lord your God is driving out the nations before you because of these detestable acts.
13 You must be blameless before the Lord your God.
14 Though these nations you are about to drive out listen to fortune-tellers and diviners, the Lord your God has not permitted you to do this.
Isaiah 5:20 (CSB)
Woe to those who call evil goodand good evil,
who substitute darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who substitute bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter.
Mark 7:13 (NKJV)
making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.Romans 12:2, 9 (NKJV)
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.
Romans 13:12 (NKJV)
The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.1 Corinthians 10:21 (NKJV)
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (NKJV)
14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?
16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:
“I will dwell in them
And walk among them.
I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.”
17 Therefore
“Come out from among them
And be separate, says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
And I will receive you.”
18 “I will be a Father to you,
And you shall be My sons and daughters,
Says the Lord Almighty.”
Ephesians 5:6-12 (NKJV)
6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.7 Therefore do not be partakers with them.
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),
10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.
12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.
2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV)
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.1 John 4:18 (NKJV)
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.3 John 11 (NKJV)
Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.Here is a video from an ex witch who is now a born again believer...
