"The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish tears it down with her own hands". Prov.14:1 (NASB)

Don’t get it twisted sister {Submission is NOT…}

This month I have been sharing some scriptures and thoughts to ponder on what the Bible instructs wives about submitting to their own husband. If you are wondering what I'm talking about, please read God's Plan for the Christian Wife part 4 and God's Plan for the Christian Wife part 6. I have done further study on this topic of wives submitting and wanted to come back to share more thoughts for clarity on what true Biblical submission entails. First, let’s define some words from the first 6 verses in 1 Peter 3.
KJV-
1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.
3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
In the Strong’s Concordance the word subjection (#G5293) is the word hupotasso which means= to be or rank under, obey

The word obey not (#G544) is the word apeitheo which means= not believe (willfully and perversely), disobedient, unbelieving

The word be won (#G2770) is the word kerdaino which means= to gain, acquire, win

The word conversation (#G391) is the word anastrophe which means= behavior, conduct

The word behold (#G2029) is the word epopteuo which means= inspect, watch, look upon, be an eyewitness

The word chaste (#G53) is the word hagnos which means= innocent, modest, perfect- clean, pure, holy

The word fear (#G5401) is the word phobos which means= alarm or fright, panic flight, terror

The word adorning (#G2889) is the word kosmos which means= orderly arrangement, world

The word hidden (#G2927) is the word kruptos which means= concealed, private, secret

The word not corruptible (#G862) is the word aphthartos which means= undecaying, imperishable, indestructible

The word meek (#G4239) is the word praus which means= mild, gentle, humble

The word quiet (#G2272) is the word hesuchios which means= still (undisturbed), tranquil, peaceful

The word spirit (#G4151) is the word pneuma which means= mental disposition

The word of great price (#G4185) is the word poluteles which means= very precious, very costly, great value

The word manner (#G3779) is the word houto which means= in this way, like, after that

The word amazement (#G4423) is the word ptoesis which means= alarm, excitement, dismay

Note: It would be a good idea to check out Matthew Henry's Commentary. The main part for the wives starts in the 2nd paragraph.

Now back to what submission is not. We must not make the mistake of carrying the text on submission beyond its true limits. In God's Word you don’t see God the Father asking a wife to do the following:

Submission means a wife can NEVER open her mouth, period.

Submission means a wife can NEVER have an opinion.

Submission means a wife can NEVER disagree with a decision her husband is considering.

Submission means a wife can NEVER lovingly warn her husband if it appears he’s about to make the wrong decision.
(While she may not agree with her husband, she still has to watch HOW she approaches him and with what attitude it is done in. Remember she MUST be respectful, kind, and gentle because scripture says this is the way a Christian wife is to be.)

Submission means accepting physical, verbal, or mental abuse as God's will. No no no! A wife is NOT to be a punching bag, a doormat, or even steal, lie, cheat, commit any acts of adultery, or do anything else for her husband that God's Word commands the believer not to do. Remember Colossians 3:18? Her submission has to be fitting unto the Lord.

Submission means just suffering PASSIVELY for the Lord's sake. No, that’s not biblically sound. Please read 1 Peter 3:17 very carefully.

Submission means being afraid of doing the right thing. Again, no! That is not biblically sound either.

It's important for us to have a truly Biblical understanding of submission because people get it all twisted. We need to know how God wants us wives to carry this out to bring Him glory rather than listen to people (especially women) who oppose what God clearly states in His Word is His Will for wives. They have gotten wrong information from the world and are believing a lie straight from the pit of hell. Many women don't have a true understanding (like I once did) of what God is asking of a wife. That's why it's so crucial to study His Word, pray for understanding, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you in this. This completes my God's Plan for Christian Wives series. I pray what I have shared has blessed someone.
